Nittany Lions earn win in game two; Hannon, Norris homer

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team benefited from its patience at the plate to earn an 8-4 win against Iowa in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Penn State collected four hits and 12 walks in the contest. Penn State dropped the first game, 9-6, after Iowa took the lead in the fifth.

Penn State is now 24-15 overall and 6-8 in Big Ten play, while Iowa is 31-11 overall and 8-6 in conference action.

Sunday's series finale is set for 12 p.m. Sunday is Vs. Cancer Day and includes postgame kids run the bases. The game was moved up from a 1 p.m. start.

In game one, Penn State helda 5-3 lead but Iowa took the lead with a grand slam in the fifth.

In game two, Kyle Hannon (solo) and Grant Norris (three-run) launched homers to lead the PSU offense.

With a triple in game one, Tayven Kelley collected his fifth triple of the season. He moved into a tie for second in a season at Penn State with Sean Deegan (2010, 2011), Jordan Steranka (2011), Joe Blackburn (2007), Michael Campo (2000) and Russ Mushinsky (1990). Kelley is one triple behind Kevin Billotte (6; 1995) for the PSU season record.

Kelley also earned his 11th career triple, moving into a tie with Russ Mushinsky (11; 1989-92) for fifth all-time at Penn State.

Kyle Hannon picked up a stolen base in game one for his 25th of the season. He moved into sole possession of second in a season at Penn State and trails only Michael Campo (27; 1999) for the PSU season mark.

Thomas Bramley drew three walks on Saturday to raise his season total to 36. He's tied for seventh in a season at Penn State with Matt Wood (2022) and Scott Gummo (2006).

Game One
Jaden Henline made his sixth start on the mound for the Nittany Lions, working two innings. Henline gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits.

Travis Luensmann threw four innings in relief, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits. He struck out two and walked four. Tommy Molsky fired three shutout innings, giving up just two hits and a walk, while striking out five.

Brody Brecht got the start for Iowa, going two-thirds of an innings. Brecht allowed four runs on a hit and five walks, while striking out one. Jack Whitlock settled things down for the Hawkeyes, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing just one run (unearned) on two hits. Whitlock struck out five and walked one. Jared Simpson allowed one run on two hits in two innings before Luke Llewellyn threw a scoreless ninth.

Penn State tallied six runs on six hits. Tayven Kelley collected two hits, including a triple, an RBI and a run. Grant Norris recorded a triple, an RBI and a run. Kyle Hannon had an RBI single, a run and a stolen base.

Iowa scored nine runs on 17 hits. Keaton Anthony led the way with five hits, including a double and a grand slam, two runs and four RBI. Raider Tello had three hits and two RBI, while Ben Wilmes contributed two singles, two runs and two RBI.

The Hawkeyes jumped out to an early lead. With one out in the first, Anthony lined a single to left. Brennen Dorighi followed with a line drive to the gap in left-center for a double to move Anthony to third. Tello sent a ground ball single to center to bring home Anthony and Dorighi. Iowa held a 2-0 lead.

The Nittany Lions responded with four runs in the bottom half. With one out, the Nittany Lions worked four-straight walks. Thomas Bramley drew the first walk, followed by Jay Harry. Penn State loaded the bases on a four-pitch walk by Bobby Marsh. Norris held off on a 3-1 pitch to take a walk and allow Bramley to score. A wild pitch brought home Harry and moved runners up to second and third. Josh Spiegel bounced a grounder to the right side, which resulted in a ground out but drove in Marsh. After Billy Gerlott worked a walk, Kelley ripped a single to left-center to bring home Norris. Penn State led 4-2 through the first.

Iowa added a run in the second. Michael Seegers started the inning with a single to right. A grounder by Cade Moss was misplayed, allowing Moss to reach and Seegers to advance to third. Wilmes lifted a fly ball to right for a sac fly as Seegers scored. Penn State's lead was trimmed to 4-3.

Penn State responded with a run in the bottom half. Hannon reached on an error to start the inning. Bramley ripped a single to right to put runners on the corners. Harry launched a fly ball to right for a sac fly to bring home Hannon. Penn State extended its lead to 5-3.

The Hawkeyes scored in the top of the fourth. Wilmes led off the inning with a single to right. Anthony lined a single to center, which was misplayed in center to allow Wilmes to hustle home. Penn State led 5-4.

The Hawkeyes took the lead with five runs in the fifth. Sam Hojnar drew a walk to start the inning. Seegers dropped a single into left-center before Moss worked a walk to load the bases. Wilmes lined a single to center to bring home Hojnar. On an 0-2 pitch, Anthony launched a fly ball over the wall in left for a grand slam. Iowa held a 9-5 lead.

Penn State got a run in the ninth. Kelley led off the inning with a triple to the corner in right. Two batters later, Hannon sent a single to right to plate Kelley. Penn State cut the deficit to 8-6, but a fly out and a ground out ended the inning.

Game Two
Jordan Morales got the start for the Nittany Lions, throwing four shutout innings. Morales gave up two hits and one walk, while striking out three. Daniel Ouderkirk entered the game to begin the fifth, recording one out while giving up three runs on three hits and two walks.

Anthony Steele worked 1.2 scoreless innings, to pick up the win, with two strikeouts. Steven Miller earned the save with three innings, allowing one run on two hits, and struck out three.

Marcus Morgan made the start for the Hawkeyes, throwing 1.1 innings. Morgan allowed four runs on one hit and five walks, while striking out one. Aaron Savary threw four innings in relief, allowed three runs on two hits and three walks, while striking out four. Jacob Henderson walked the only batter he faced and that batter eventually scored. Luke Llewellyn walked two batters and recorded one out. Chas Wheatley closed out the sixth and threw a scoreless seventh. Will Christophersen threw a scoreless eighth.

Penn State notched eight runs on four hits, while drawing 12 walks. Kyle Hannon hit a solo homer to go with two RBI and two runs, while Grant Norris launched a three-run homer. Tayven Kelley drew three walks and scored twice.

Iowa registered four runs on seven hits. Brennen Dorighi collected two hits, including a double, a run and two RBI. Keaton Anthony added a hit and two runs.

The Nittany Lions gained an early lead in the first. Hannon drew a leadoff walk. Four straight balls put Thomas Bramley on first with a walk and moved Hannon up to second. With two outs, Norris crushed a 2-0 pitch over the nook in left-center for a three-run homer. Penn State took a 3-0 lead.

Penn State added a run in the second. Kelley and Billy Gerlott worked walks to begin the frame. The bases were loaded when Hannon held off on a 3-2 pitch. After a pitching change, Bramley bounced a ground ball to second. The play resulted in a fielder's choice, but Kelley scored from third to extend Penn State's lead to 4-0.

The Nittany Lions plated a run in the fourth. With two outs, Hannon launched a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right for his seventh homer of the year. Penn State pushed its lead to 5-0.

Iowa answered with three runs in the fifth. Cade Moss started the inning with a single to left. Anthony drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Dorighi hit a fly ball off the wall in left for a double to bring home both runners. Raider Tello followed with a double down the line in left to plate Dorighi. Penn State led 5-3 through five innings.

Penn State plated three runs, without a hit, in the sixth. With one out, Kelley, Gerlott and Steele worked walks to load the bases. Hannon lifted a fly ball to center for a sac fly as Kelley scored from third. A wild pitch moved Gerlott to third and Steele to second. Bramley drew a walk to re-load the bases. Jay Harry held off on a 3-2 pitch for a walk as Gerlott crossed the plate. A wild pitch bounced away to allow Steele to score. Penn State extended its lead to 8-3.

Iowa got a run in the ninth. Anthony was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Dorighi singled to center to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Sam Petersen dropped a bunt down the third base line to bring home Anthony.
